Labradorite and its shifting colors
An Inuit legend from Labrador tells of the Northern Lights being trapped inside the rocks. A hunter freed them, but some of the light remained in the stone, giving labradorite its colourful flashes.
Labradorite takes its name from Labrador, Canada, where it was first recognised in 1770. By the late 1700s, its unusual colors had made it a popular choice for jewelry in England and France.
Labradorite belongs to the feldspar family of minerals and is known for an optical effect called labradorescence. This shifting play of color comes from the way light reflect with fine layers inside the stone. Blue, green and gold are among the colors you may see, and each stone has its own combination.
The flash depends on light and the angle from which you view the stone. A labradorite may look grey or dark from one direction, then suddenly reveal a blue or green flash when you turn it. The same stone can therefore look quite different as the light or its position changes.
symbolism and spiritual meaning
Labradorite is associated with transformation, intuition, protection and creativity. These meanings come from spiritual beliefs and symbolic interpretations. They offer different ways of finding a personal connection with the stone.
Change and inner strength
Labradorite is often called a stone of transformation. It is associated with moving through change, exploring new possibilities and leaving familiar patterns behind.
Its shifting colors represent a beautiful image for this idea. A stone that seems dark can reveal something unexpected when the light changes. Symbolically, this can represent parts of ourselves that we are still discovering: abilities, interests or the courage to try a different direction.
A piece of labradorite jewelry might mark a new chapter in your life. It can become a personal reminder to give yourself time to grow and to recognise the strength involved in taking even a small step forward.
Intuition and self-trust
Labradorite is also associated with intuition and a connection to your inner voice. In chakra-based practices, it is often linked with the third eye, which represents perception, awareness and inner wisdom.

As a personal symbol, this connection can be about making space to notice your own thoughts and feelings. When there are many opinions around you, it can help to understand what matters to you and which direction feels right.
Wearing labradorite might represent an intention to pause, reflect and make choices that feel true to you. Its meaning can be a quiet reminder to trust your judgement while remaining open to learning.

Protection and emotional balance
Labradorite is often described as a protective stone, believed to shield personal energy from unwanted influences. It is also associated with grounding and emotional balance.
On a symbolic level, protection can represent the boundaries you choose for yourself: knowing when you need rest, deciding where to give your attention and allowing yourself space away from constant demands.
A piece of jewelry can carry that intention into everyday life. You might choose labradorite as a reminder to return to yourself, make room for your feelings and treat your own needs with care.
Creativity and inspiration
Labradorite is connected with imagination, curiosity and creative expression. Its changing appearance offers a fitting symbol for discovering possibilities and following an idea as it develops.
Every stone presents a different combination of colors and markings. A small detail can become the starting point for a shape, a drawing or an entirely new direction. That openness to noticing and exploring is something I find closely connected with creativity.
You might wear labradorite as a reminder to give your ideas room, experiment and allow your own style to develop. For me, this meaning feels especially close to making jewelry.
A piece of jewelry can gather meaning over time. It might become connected with a new beginning, a memory or the person you were when you chose it. The symbolism of labradorite offers a starting point, while your own experiences make that connection personal.
For me, labradorite will always be connected to the beginning of my jewelry journey and the creativity I discovered along the way. I used it in my very first pendants, and I still keep coming back to this beautiful stone.
Let yourself be enchanted. Every piece of jewelry in my collection is crafted with the unique personality of each stone in mind, Which labradorite is waiting to tell your story?
